“Everything In Our Power” was produced by the Russian environmental group, Green World, to document the decommissioning of Maine Yankee nuclear power station. Presented in this film are Ray Shadis of Edgecomb, Maine as well as Maine state officials and Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company personnel. Ray, who has been on the board of New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution since 1982, was deeply involved with Friends of the Coast in the shut down and decommissioning of Maine Yankee. The Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company openly credited Friends of the Coast for leading the company to a stricter, cleaner decommissioning than any plant in the country.
Ray was the only environmental and nuclear safety advocate on the Maine Yankee Community Advisory Panel on Decommissioning and he was the lead public interest negotiator on the Maine Yankee decommissioning, for residual radiation standards, site assessment, dry fuel storage conditions, security, off-site environmental radiation surveys, and more.
Shadis also worked with Maine Yankee and NRC on the seminal NRC Staff Report, NUREG-1738, Spent Fuel Pool Accident Risk at Decommissioning Nuclear Power Stations (2000-2001) . He also served on NRC’s Initial Implementation Evaluation Panel for the NRC’s Reactor Oversight Program as well as the Keystone Foundation’s National Dialogue on Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning.
Following the film, Shadis will review ways Vermont Yankee can follow Maine Yankee’s work.
